Who said you have to quit sugar? As discussed in our previous post about sugar, it is not possible or even convenient for you. Nevertheless, lowering your consumption of added sugar would definitely have a positive effect on your overall health.
Here are 8 tips to help you:
- Drink plain tea or coffee.
- Don’t add sugar in your cereals or yogurts.
- Do not eat processed foods: they are usually higher in sugar to make them taste better.
- Avoid low fat and fat-free products (such as 0% yogurts): when the fat is taken out, sugar is often added.
- Read the labels: try to look for sugar and all its hidden forms.
- Pay attention to non-dairy milk: always buy the unsweetened version. If you want it to be sweet add honey or agave syrup.
- Sometimes, your sugar cravings are actually a sign of dehydration: remember to drink a lot of water throughout the day to reduce your chances of eating biscuits, donuts or cakes.
- Eat more healthy fat: coconut oil, olive oil, avocados, eggs, nuts, olives etc.
Now the good news is that you can easily replace the “bad” sugar with these great healthy natural substitutes:
- Fruit syrups: maple syrup, agave syrup, date syrup etc.
- Rice syrup: this is the most suitable substitute and it tastes really good.
- Cinnamon, dates or honey.
- Spices such as turmeric, curry, paprika, nutmeg etc.
- Satisfy your sugar cravings with fruits, especially bananas and apples. Not only they are sweet but quite nutritious.
So, are you ready to change your old habits and become healthier? Take this easy step and let us know how you are doing!
