One of my biggest real life heroes is my mother. She is the type of woman that everybody loves because she’s all the time helping people out, one way or another.
Probably the earliest memory I have regarding her big, golden heart dates back when I was around 3 or 4 years old. Before she became the widely respected and influential woman that she is now.
This particular day I was on my mom’s office and she needed to sort some papers out before the end of that day (crazy Mexican bureaucracy) so we had to go running from one office to another in the middle of a huge storm and that day her car was being repaired so we had to take public transport. The cool thing is that she had a really big umbrella and I had one of those raincoats that cover you really well so I thought it would turn out to be a fantastic adventure because I was going to see some thunders and after all none of us were really going to get wet, right?
Shortly before we arrived at the office we needed to go to, there was a really old woman that was completely wet as a consequence of the storm. My mother stopped next to the old lady to ask her where she was heading to while she handed the old woman her beautiful umbrella. At that point I just stopped listening as I was in complete shock of what was going on: my mother was now getting soaked as a consequence of what she just did and if that wasn’t bad enough she asked me to stay where I was while she stopping a cab and giving the lady money to pay for it! I thought she was going mad or something!
I remember the old lady started to cry during the interaction and she kissed my mother with such affection while her broken down voice was filling the air with blessings for my mom. I just didn’t know what to do but when my mom grabbed my hand again I noticed her eyes were also teary. I, still quite puzzled, asked her why she did that, and told her that she was all wet (as if she hadn’t notice already) and I said that she would probably get sick. I also asked her if she knew that person. She calmly replied that she didn’t know the old lady and that she did it because it was the right thing and that I should not worry about her because she was young and strong, unlike the old lady she had just helped.
She added “imagine that was your grandmother, wouldn’t you like someone else to help her if she was in the same situation?”. I immediately replied “Of course!”. My grandmother was one of my favorite persons so I didn’t have to think twice about it! Then she said, “there you go, so now you understand why I did it, now lets get this stuff done”. I suppose that imagining a person you loved being on similar situation would help even a little boy realize what had just happened so at that point everything was clear to me and I felt so happy about having experienced that. When people, even my family, asked my mother what had happened to her (her dress, shoes and make up were all messed up) she just mentioned she gave her umbrella to an old poor lady. She didn’t mention she gave all her pocket money to the lady (I know she did because when we came home she made the cab wait while she went to our place to get some money to pay the cab).
As you can see I remember every single bit of that particular experience as if it had happened today. Even though my mom had underplayed what she did, as we all normally do when we do something nice for another being, no matter how heroic it is. That interaction was key in my development as I experienced first hand the value and importance of compassion and selflessness. It made me also realize I was one of the luckiest boys on Earth as I was being born from an angel! Actually, just as a fun note, the year I was born my mother was chosen to play Mary and I got to be baby Jesus on the county’s representation of the Nativity in December. I know it has nothing to do with this post but the pictures I was shown to later on came to my mind when I was writing this down.
We all have mothers, sisters, cousins, fathers, brothers, and boyfriends or girlfriends. Some already have sons, daughters, husbands or wives and pets! So whenever you have the chance to brighten up another being’s day just do so, go ahead and take the chance cause maybe your loved ones could be in need at the same time in another part of the world and I am certain you’d like them to get some help, right?
Everywhere were my mother is known I can be certain that all doors will be suddenly wide open if I mention her name. For me, that is an irrefutable proof that it all comes back to you and/or your loved ones. Or in other words, for me that means that indeed karma exists and it is completely real. So do good as, you, or the people you care about will get good in return.PS: Tomorrow is Mother’s day in Mexico, so happy mother’s day to all mothers in the world, including of course my own:
I love you mom! |

Beautiful story of how we can ALL make a difference if we use compassion instead of judgement, thank you!
