Recently Elise (my sweet girlfriend) and me watched the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower. In that movie, there is the song “Heroes” by David Bowie. If you have heard it you know it’s quite catchy and you find yourself singing it from time to time for a while after you’ve been exposed to it. We, of course, weren’t the exception and on one of those days that Elise was singing it I remember I said to her “well, we can be heroes every single day, not just one, don’t you think?”. She replied “definitely, I am just singing it as the song goes because I can’t get it out of my head!”.
We both truly believe that all of us can be heroes every single day and that is why since some months ago we have been working on different projects around that mindset. The core among those projects is this, Sum Mundus, which is latin for I Am The World. What is behind this statement? The simple premise that the world is a reflection of yourself so if you want a happy, free, loving, kind, compassionate, fulfilled world it is only up to you. You do not need to wear a cape, develop super powers or go around fighting “bad guys” or in fact fighting anybody at all. We have the power to shape our world, and doing so is honestly really simple. We can start with basic, individual actions such as smiling to strangers on the street (even if they look scary or grumpy), open the door for an elderly person, give clothes to a homeless person or some other even “easier” things such as buying environmentally friendly products or eating healthy (for the latter you will get a lot of advises here).
I am you, you are me. I am the world, the world is I. You have heard it before: we are all connected somehow. This is not some new-age hippie statement but a reality backed up by science (from psychology to quantum physics) and promoted by some of the major spiritual characters (and religious texts) in human history that hint or claim that physical separation is nothing but a mere illusion.
Despite all this, most people around the world do not seem to be consciously aware of this interconnection and they live like if their actions, words, or even thoughts do not have an impact on others at all.
Sum Mundus is at the core of different projects that will be rolled out in phases (no spoilers here, sorry!). All of those projects have been conceived as tools to empower and encourage people to do good. First and mostly on an individual basis. Why? Because a happy, fulfilled person is much more likely to spread that happiness around, don’t you agree? Just think about it, when you are happy you are not only smiling and beaming with assertive, positive energy, you also tend to see the world as a much better place to live in. That doesn’t mean you’re blind to the world’s most pressing and concerning issues, as a matter of fact you are probably much more aware of them. The difference is that instead of just acknowledging those issues, or getting more depressed (as an unhappy person would), you would direct your energy towards improving or eliminating those issues because that’s what happy people do! Why? Simply because happy people is more compassionate than unhappy people. Compassion is hard wired to happiness and action is fundamentally embedded to compassion.
We would love to make this portal as interactive as possible and we are sure that you have something to share. No matter how simple it is, even the smallest deed can inspire others! Please step forward and join us. Everybody likes stories and honestly, who doesn’t like heroes? We do not need to wait for the next Spider-Man, Superman, or Batman movie to get inspired because the world is already full of heroes! What we are lacking is all those stories that bring us hope and let’s face it the world is craving for hope!
So let’s inspire each other, lets make hope our common banner because if I am the world and the world is I; I’d rather be hope, love, kindness, compassion and (insert your positive emotion here)…
Elise and Rodrigo
